Self portraits, a common thing seen in the art world by many different artists alike. Artists use self portraits as a form of deeper self expression, as art is a form of self expression in itself the action of the artists adding themselves into their work forms a whole different level of intimacy. Marc Quinn has taken a new spin on the self portrait area, see how he is baffling the world...
It is not an uncommon thing to see artists create frozen sculptures, carving beautiful works of art from glistening ice, often with great attention to detail. However the word to focus on here is ice, something Marc Quinn has sworn against using in his ongoing self portrait entitled 'Self'. Taking 'self portrait' quite literally Quinn creates a single sculpture from 4.5 litres of his own blood, collected during the course of 5 months every 6 weeks by his doctor. Quinn creates a new version of 'self' every 5 years, each of which documents his own physical transformation and deterioration.
Quinn describes 'self' as his "frozen head series", stating it is all about the impossibility of immortality. He likes to refer to the works as "an artwork on life support" due to the fact it can only exist in a culture where looking after art is a priority. Quinn has spoken about creating his very last portrait after his death, draining his whole body of blood and creating a larger version to finalize the series. However he has currently said in an interview with The Huffington Post that he has not decided as to whether or not it is a good idea, due to the whole sculpture series being "based around the living and not the dead".
