Bondage: fashion's secret fantasy

Bondage...Whips? Chains? Leather? Harnesses?...

Bondage and fashion are two things the fashion industry would never expect to mix, but they have. When fetish fashion first hit catwalks back  in 2009 it was all leather, studs and chains but it's moved on. It is no longer a season-defined statement trend. It has morphed into something else, something more subtle, constantly floating around the edges, classic-inspired and refined.

When on this subject, one celebrity seems to spring into mind. Lady Gaga. She's the goddess of fashion and known for her extreme, on the edge wardrobe so it's really no surprise that she took a big hit on this trend. To this day, she's still wrapping herself in straps, wearing fishnets and an excessive use of leather is often seen in her outfits and may I say - she looks amazing while doing it!! Having the rare ability to take something which the fashion world once deemed far from elegant, infusing black leather, sheer fabric and strap-like detail into night gowns and high fashion shoots. Well done Gaga.

Catwalks have been flooded with bondage-like elements over the past few years, however as the popularity increased the once broad elements of bulky straps, chains and studs simmered down into something less of a statement. Bondage fashion is no longer something as definite, it is rather something that toughens edges of most fashion pieces, constantly lingering; it may even be more popular than you think.

There's nothing like a leather torso harness to toughen up an otherwise flirty leopard-printed party dress, Dsquared definitely know how to add that little extra sexy spice in their s/s 2013 collection.

A perfect twist on a night gown is this piece from Versace's a/w 2013 collection, the use of latex is a subtle way to add sexiness to a piece of formal wear, without the use of harsh elements.

On the otherwise less subtle side of bondage wear is this piece from KTZ's s/s 2012 collection. A figure-hugging pattern of leather harnesses following the silhouette and creating a not-really-there illusion of a piece of clothing.

AND FINALLY

Should the intriguing world of fetish wear and high fashion stay separate? Or will the striking world of sex be a frequent appearance in the future of fashion?
